GOMPHU KORA
About 9 miles north of Tashigang lies a very sacred meditation site of
Bhutan's most revered
Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche. It is a small hollow in a large black
rock. Whilst meditating in
the cave in the C8th CE, he was startled by the appearance of a demonic
cobra from the nearby
river and, jumping up, his hat left a lasting deep impression in the
cave roof. He subdued the demon
and bound it to become a guardian of Buddhism. In the C17th CE a small
temple was built on the site.
It is a powerful pilgrimage place, and an unusual Tsechu (festival) is
held here annually.
Derek & Sheila attended this in 2004 (see
photographs).
